Tours through ‘British’ Menorca

This summer 2017 travel to Menorca and discover its more historical side, which shows its link to England, since for many years the island was under the dominion of the British. From that time, there are not only artistic and military monuments remaining, but also more functional civic constructions such as the vial D'en Kane, the first road opened by the British after Menorca officially conceded in the Treaty of Utrech.

Menorca remembers with affection and a lot of respect those years of British domination and, in fact, since then the island ‘s institutions have been work to gather all the details of that British legacy and little by little they have designed tours that allow the visitor to get to know that interesting period of Anglo-Saxon colonization of the Mediterranean.

From that time we can see today the famous Fort Malbourough, the watchtowers that dot the entire coast of Mahon to Ciutadella, observing coves such as Cala Galdana or Cala d'en Bosch and the area of S'Albufera des Grau and Fornells. Nor should we miss visiting The Isle of the King, which the British called ‘Bloody Island ‘since their field hospital was situated there, should also not be missed.

The British left much of their character in Menorca. They made the most of the unceasing island wind, by transforming the port of Mahon into one of the most important for Mediterranean maritime trade. The capital of the island was moved from Ciutadella to Mahon, in order to promote the coming and going of ships that transported and brought everything. At the same time, gin was conquering the island with its flavor, so much so that today it is one of the most home produced and loved drinks on the island and, though attributed to Menorca its Gin Xoriguer with its mild, sweet, delicious flavor, has extended to the rest of the Balearic Islands.

The language also shows the English spirit and its strange humor: Menorquins do not tell jokes but `joques’ and chant words that have become established since the time when their ancestors learnt to understand the British Empire’s representatives on the island.
