The great festivals of Minorca, welcome to Sant Joan (Saint Juan) 2015

This is the start of a great month for Minorca. The beach, sun, the start of summer and ... the long awaited celebration of Saint John (Sant Joan), the patron saint of Ciutadella and an essential summer Mediterranean event, during which time tradition embraces all of the current sporting, gastronomic and musical offerings.

The fame of this festival, which traditionally was only for local inhabitants living in and around the town, has converted it into a massive meeting place where visitors return from all over the world year after year. Thousands of people congregate in Cuitadella between 20th and 25th June, during which time there is a continuous party atmosphere with unlimited activities, both during the day and at night.

Although this festival is more to enjoy with friends or with your partner, there are also numerous activities for children in Minorca during this time, from children's games and shows in the squares to night time dancing in the streets for all the family.

The programme of official acts is from 20th June when the traditional Vetlla des Be is celebrated, to 25th, the great end of the festival. The 21st is the Dia des Be, the 23rd is the day before Sant Joan, which is the excellent night time celebration: the typical throwing of hazelnuts, bonfires, beach activities, music, parades, dancing, cold "pomada" (a Minorcan drink with gin) and good Minorcan cuisine to help you to recuperate lost energy. The 24th is the festival, with never ending proposals for all tastes although the most spectacular is without doubt, the well known Jocs des Pla, where you can see the parade of the most beautiful examples of pure bred Minorcan horses.

Accommodation in Minorca during these dates is complicated because a few days before the start, apart from hanging out the "Fully booked" sign, the prices increase considerably. However, at Prinsotelhotels and apartments in Cuitadellaand at our villas in Cala Galdanayou can still find a last minute offer or perhaps more wisely choose to stay on after the festival and enjoy all the island has to offer. Consult availability and prices here.

Come and enjoy the Sant Joan festival 2015 with us!
