Enjoy seafaring Majorca

08.08.2014

Majorca is an island of many contrasts where you can find a combination of all the advantages of a Mediterranean island, a great city with the facility of movement of one much smaller, mountain villages, extensive plains, fine sandy beaches, rocky coves and small fishing villages, where you can savour excellent sea food.

Cala Ratjada, Son Servera, Porto Cristo and Portocolom, el Molinar in Palma and Andratx are, among others, the principal exponents of this seafaring Majorca. The majority are situated in the area near to our hotel in Cala d'Or on the Majorcan east coast, offering an image linked to tourism but where clearly perceived is the link to the fishing fleets of the past, with small ports and the typical boats (llaut) dotted around the blue Mediterranean.

The fishing village par excellence in Majorca is Cala Ratjada, where the Hotel Prinsotel La Pineda can be found. Today it is one of principal touristic areas on the island, but with a considerable fishing industry: every day small fishing boats arrive full of some of the most exquisite varieties to be found in the Minorcan canal, such as cap roig, red prawns gallo, llobarro etc.

Next in intensity and fervor for fishing is the Son Servera coast, namely Cala Bona, where every year they have sea food fairs, where it is possible to try many dishes and products from the sea, the most typical of the island.

Continuing south you will find Porto Cristo and Portocolom, two of the villages with the most fishing tradition. Both are proud of their charming fishing fleets and the inviting restaurants around the ports.

Porto Colom

In Palma, the neighbourhood of El Molinar, is one of the most important areas for fishermen on the island. Following along the coast, we pass Calvia and arrive at Andratx, with a very active port and an enviable environment.
